Found out a 15th century bookbinder in Bruges was paid per book, not per hour, and now I'm rethinking my whole pricing setup
Saw it in a translated guild ledger from 1475 where a guy named Jan got 4 silver for a full leather binding but nothing for the prep work. So do you charge per finished book or track every hour, and which one has burned you worse?
The "paid per book but nothing for prep work" thing is why I switched to flat rates per project years ago. Tracking every hour nearly killed me on a job that dragged on for months, the client fought the bill and I ate the loss.
