Update: I hit 9 little free libraries in one Saturday and only 2 had anything good
Last Saturday I mapped out every little free library within biking distance of my place in Grand Rapids and hit 9 of them in about 5 hours. I figured I would come home with a bag full of stuff, but 4 of them were mostly old Danielle Steel paperbacks and diet cookbooks from the 90s. The two good ones were the box outside a church on Wealthy St and one in a front yard near Houseman Field, where I grabbed a beat up copy of The Long Goodbye and a Vonnegut I did not own yet. Do the little libraries near you ever actually have anything worth taking, or am I just hitting the wrong side of town?
Four out of nine having junk is not even a bad ratio if you ask me. The whole point of those boxes is that people drop off whatever they are done with, so of course you get a pile of Danielle Steel and old cookbooks, that is just the nature of the thing. You still came home with Chandler and a Vonnegut you did not have, which sounds like a win for a free Saturday on a bike. If every box was stacked with gold people would treat them like a store and the whole vibe would be gone. The hunt is the fun part, not the haul.
Nine libraries and you came home with diet cookbooks from the 90s, that is a real low point for civilization. Sounds like the good stuff is all on the Wealthy St side, so maybe just stick to that area next time.
