PSA: that bargain lot of 20 sci-fi novels from Facebook Marketplace

I snagged a box of 20 paperbacks for $10 from a guy in Austin, figured I'd save a ton on reading for the summer. Took me 4 hours over two days to scrub out old coffee stains, erase pencil marks, and peel off sticky labels from some thrift store that was clearly a hoarder situation. Has anyone else wasted a whole weekend cleaning up 'like new' used books that were anything but?

and omg yes I feel this so hard. last month I grabbed a box of "gently used" thrillers from some lady on Craigslist and spent three hours scrubbing what I think was old pasta sauce off the covers. like I get that books are meant to be read but come on, at least wipe them down before you sell them.

Swipe them down with a Clorox wipe first, that handled the worst of it for me. Then I used a magic eraser on the sticky spots, worked way better than soap and water. Finally left them out in the sun for a day to kill any weird smells.
