I finally learned my lesson about buying box sets blind, $120 gone

Grabbed a 12 book mystery series from a used shop outside Tulsa. Looked great, all matching covers, seemed like a steal. Got home and half the books had missing chapters. Like whole sections just cut out, probably a bad print run. Checked the publisher and it was some tiny outfit that went under in 2009. No refunds from the shop, they said all sales final. Has anyone else gotten burned by a matching set from a dealer who wont let you crack the spines first?
