Half-price hardcovers at a library sale, but the real find was in the discard bin
Last Saturday I hit the Friends of the Library sale in Portland and grabbed 11 books for $17 total. Most were beat-up paperbacks, but they had a whole cart of discards marked free. I pulled out a 1962 first edition of The Moviegoer with a library card pocket still glued inside. Someone had underlined passages in pencil and left tiny notes in the margins, like their own private book club. That copy means more to me than any of the shiny new ones I paid for. Does anyone else prefer the marked-up library castoffs over clean copies? I want to know who else digs through the free bins.
