Estate sale in Portland net me a full Folio Society set for $40
Last Sunday I hit an estate sale in SE Portland and there it was, a complete 12 volume Folio Society set of Sherlock Holmes sitting in a box marked 'free with any purchase'. I bought a $2 mug just to take the box home. Condition is near perfect, even the slipcases are tight. Anyone else ever gotten a ridiculous set this cheap or did I just burn my luck for the decade?
Man, that's a hell of a find. My buddy Dave once scored a full set of the Sibley bird guides at a garage sale for like five bucks. He wasn't even looking for them, just saw this cardboard box labeled 'old books' and figured he'd flip through for something to read on the toilet. The guy running the sale had no clue what he had, just wanted them gone. Dave still brings it up every time we're at a thrift store, swears he'll never top that day. Your Holmes set is right up there with his story, probably better since those slipcases usually get beat to hell. I'd say you're set for a while, but never say never, those estate sales hide weird stuff.
