Our club argued about Dune for 3 weeks until I suggested a 40 page cutoff
Nobody in my Tuesday night book club could finish Dune except me and one other guy, so every meeting turned into the same fight about who was lazy and who was lying. After the third week of this, I said what if we agree that anyone who hits page 40 gets to vote and anyone who doesn't just has to sit there quietly. I figured it would blow up in my face, but it totally worked. Six of the nine of us made it past 40, the other three admitted they just didn't care about the book, and we actually had a real talk about the spice and the politics. We've used the rule for two books since then, and meetings went from 90 minutes of yelling to about 45 minutes of talking. Is a page cutoff a cop out, or does your club have some kind of rule that keeps things moving?
So the three people who couldn't get through 40 pages just sit there with no say while the rest of you decide everything? That's not a book club, that's a reading test with a participation trophy for the winners.
