TIL I been overcleaning my torch tip for years

I was at a union hall in Pittsburgh last Thursday and this old timer saw me scrubbing my cutting tip with a wire brush. He told me I probably wore out three tips already this year from doing that. He said just use a tip cleaner and leave the shine alone - has anyone else been told they overclean their gear?
