A retired boilermaker in Gary made me question my whole routine

He watched me prep a drum and said 'you're burning time grinding joints that ain't the problem, check your fit-up first.' That one sentence made me rework three vessels this month and cut my rework in half, has anyone else had an old-timer flip their process like that?
