Rant: picked a coal forge over propane for my first setup and I'm still not sure I chose right
Last month I had $400 saved up and had to pick between a used propane forge on Marketplace or building a coal forge from a brake drum like my grandpa did. I went with the coal setup since it was cheaper and I figured I'd learn fire management better, but man the smoke has been rough in my garage even with the door open. The first week I couldn't get anything past a dull red heat and wasted half a bag of coal before a guy at the local guild meetup showed me I was choking the air way too early. Now I can get a good orange heat going in about 15 minutes but I'm wondering if I should've just grabbed the propane one for the clean burns. Any of you start on coal and switch later, or did you stick with it?
