Guy at the supply house in Dayton said my 1084 "ain't real steel" and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was picking up a bar of 1084 last Tuesday and the old timer behind the counter made a face and said that's for kids making knives, real smiths use 5160. I get that he's been at it 30 years but it bugged me because 1084 has done everything I've asked of it, from punches to a small hawk that held up fine. Is this just old school snobbery or is there something I'm missing about it not holding up for bigger work?
