The epilogue made the whole book a joke, then a sequel fixed it

I read this sci-fi novel last month, about a space crew that finds a portal to another dimension. The final chapter just had the main character wake up in bed, like it was all a dream, but then a random alien walks in and says 'breakfast is ready,' and it ends with zero explanation. I was furious for three days. Then I picked up the sequel, and the first page had a note from the author saying he got so many angry letters he added a proper ending, and the whole thing made sense in a weird time-loop way. Has anyone else had a terrible ending that only got good after you read the follow-up book?

Did you ever want to throw a book across the room and then feel bad about it later? I had almost the same thing happen with this fantasy series where the hero just walks into the sunset and nothing gets answered, not one thing. I was mad for weeks and told everyone at work not to bother reading it. Then the second book came out and the author basically wrote a whole chapter saying yeah sorry folks, here is what really happened, and it turned out the sunset thing was actually him dying and coming back. I still think it was a cheap move to make us buy another book just to get a real ending, but at least I stopped hating it. The weird part is now I kind of like the first book more knowing what comes next.
