The epilogue made the whole book a joke, then a sequel fixed it

I read this sci-fi novel last month, about a space crew that finds a portal to another dimension. The final chapter just had the main character wake up in bed, like it was all a dream, but then a random alien walks in and says 'breakfast is ready,' and it ends with zero explanation. I was furious for three days. Then I picked up the sequel, and the first page had a note from the author saying he got so many angry letters he added a proper ending, and the whole thing made sense in a weird time-loop way. Has anyone else had a terrible ending that only got good after you read the follow-up book?
