Read the last page of two library books first, and one made way more sense than the other
Last month at the library in Reno I grabbed two mystery novels off the same shelf and decided to read each one's final page before starting chapter one. Book A's last page name-dropped three characters and a location I'd never seen, so I went in confused and it stayed confusing the whole way. Book B's last page was just a quiet conversation between two people, and by the time I got there it felt like a payoff instead of a puzzle. I finished Book A in 4 days and Book B in 9, and I honestly think the slower one was better because the ending actually fit the story. Now I can't stop wondering if this trick just weeds out sloppy writers or if I'm cheating myself out of good twists. Has anyone else peeked at the last page first, and did it ruin the book or help it?
