Picked the sad ending over the happy one in a used paperback from a Portland shop, still not sure I chose right

I found a 1987 paperback at Powell's in Portland with two different final chapters printed in it, and the note in the front said readers had to pick one before the store would buy it back. I went with the version where the main guy just walks away and nothing gets fixed, mostly because the other ending felt too neat for a book that spent 300 pages being messy. Did anyone else ever get handed a book with a choice like that, and which one did you pick?
