I finally found someone who also hated the ending of The Giver

Ran into a guy at a coffee shop in Denver last month who spent 10 minutes ranting about how the ambiguous ending felt like a cop-out and I just stood there nodding because I've never had anyone else confirm that confusion out loud - has anyone else had a random stranger validate a weird book opinion?

I was the opposite actually. Used to defend that ending hard when I read it in school. Told everyone the ambiguity was the point and you were supposed to imagine your own outcome. Then a few years back I was getting my oil changed and the guy next to me saw the book in my back seat. He said the ending felt like the author just got tired of writing and left us hanging. At first I got defensive but the more I thought about it the more I realized he had a point. Like if you're gonna set up all that tension about escaping to somewhere better you gotta at least give us a clue if it worked or not.
