Niece's 5th birthday card made me rethink a whole decade
My sister let her daughter read my letter to my own birth mom at the party on Saturday. I never shared that stuff, 9 years of sealed envelopes in a shoebox. She asked why grandma never visits, and I froze. Hearing it out loud, my reasons sounded thin. Has anyone else had family cross that line without asking? How do you handle the questions from kids?

Nine years of sealed envelopes in a shoebox and your sister turned it into story time at a 5 year old's party? That is a bold move, like serving raw chicken at a wedding and calling it a surprise. My cousin pulled something close when she told my kid I got held back in 4th grade, and now the kid brings it up every report card day. Kids ask the hard stuff because they have zero filter, so I just tell them the truth in small pieces, like grandma had some stuff going on and grown ups sometimes need space. Your reasons are not thin, they just sound different when a tiny human repeats them back with frosting on her face.
