One rainy Tuesday in Chicago showed me why I skip the first 3 episodes of every drama
I was stuck in a hotel room during a layover and realized the show I usually binge actually starts getting good around episode 4, so now I just jump straight to that point and read a one-line recap online, but has anyone else found that skipping ahead ruins the payoff or do you folks do the same?
The thing people miss is that those first few episodes usually do the setup work your brain needs to feel anything later. I tried skipping to episode 4 on a rewatch of a show I loved and the big emotional moment in season 2 hit way weaker because I never built up the small stuff, the inside jokes, the way a character says a name. It's like reading the last page of a mystery first, sure you get the answer but you lose the ride. So now I just watch at 1.5 speed through the slow parts instead of jumping, keeps the setup but stops me from bailing.
