My roommate hates when I watch with subtitles, says it ruins the flow

I use subtitles for every show. Helps with accents and low volume. My friend argues it's distracting. Says you read more than watch. We fight about it all the time. I need them to catch everything. He says it ruins the experience. What's your view on this?

It sucks when someone dismisses your viewing needs. Subtitles are essential for many people to enjoy shows fully. Hope you two can find a middle ground.

Honestly, this feels like the kinda thing people fight about when they've run out of real problems. You both have totally normal preferences. Some brains just process better with text on screen, others find it super annoying. It's not a moral failing on either side. Maybe just take turns picking the viewing style, or use headphones when you're watching alone. Turning a simple preference into a weekly argument seems like a waste of energy. It's TV, not a treaty negotiation.

Ugh, been there. My husband and I just got a second cheap TV for the bedroom so we can watch our own way sometimes. Solved so many dumb fights.
