Back in 2011 a shop in Portland taught me to true wheels by feel, not by gauge
I used to rely on a dial indicator for every truing job until I landed at a tiny shop over near Powell Blvd. The old timer there just spun the wheel and pinched the spokes, no gauge anywhere in sight. He had me close my eyes and run my thumb over each spoke crossing until I could feel the tight one. Took me maybe three weeks to trust that over a tool, and now I only bust out the dial for carbon rims. That shop closed in 2015, but I still catch myself doing the pinch test on customer wheels first. Anyone else skip the measuring tools for most spoke jobs, or am I just lazy now?
