Guy in the chair next to me at the shop said he never uses clippers on top, just scissors, and now I'm second guessing my whole routine
So I was working a busy Saturday at my shop in Columbus and the barber in the next chair, who has been cutting for like 20 years, mentions he does every single haircut with scissors on top, even the short fades guys ask for. I've always grabbed my clippers with a guard for the top on most cuts because it's fast and looks clean, and nobody has complained in the 4 years I've been behind the chair. But hearing him say that got in my head, so I tried all-scissor on a regular this past Tuesday and it took me almost 20 minutes longer. The fade part was fine, I do that the same, but blending the top into the sides by hand felt way harder and I kept second guessing where I was. The client said it looked good but I honestly couldn't tell if it was better than my normal version or if I just wanted it to be. For you folks who cut a lot, do you scissor over comb everything or do you still use guards for speed? I want to know if I'm cutting a corner or if he's just old school.

Maybe the real question is whether your clients can even tell the difference on a cut that grows out in three weeks. If nobody noticed in four years, you are not cutting a corner, you are just faster than him. Idk, seems like he might be doing it for his own pride more than the client's head.
