My neighbor in Tucson told me to stop filling my pots all the way to the rim, now I'm not sure he was right

He saw my 5 gallon buckets of peppers and said leaving a 2 inch lip helps with watering and airflow, so I tried it on half my pots. Now the filled ones seem to dry out faster but the plants look bigger, so I honestly can't tell which way wins. Anyone tested this side by side and got a clear answer?
