I counted my balcony harvest last year and got 214 cherry tomatoes, which proves the whole "one plant per pot" rule is nonsense
Everyone on here keeps saying you need one tomato plant per 5 gallon pot or they'll fight each other, but I squeezed three Sweet 100s into a single 10 gallon fabric pot on my Chicago balcony last summer and they went nuts. I picked 214 cherry tomatoes between July and September, way more than the single plant I did the year before that gave me maybe 60. The trick was pruning the lower suckers hard and watering twice a day once it got hot, not giving each plant its own zip code. Has anyone else tried crowding tomatoes on a small balcony, or am I just getting lucky with my south facing spot?
