Appreciation post: the $8 moisture meter that finally ended my 8 month balcony squash mystery
Two summers back I kept losing zucchini on my third floor balcony in Portland and could not figure out why. The leaves would droop, so I watered more, then the whole thing would rot at the base and I would start over. This went on for 8 months and three dead plants before my neighbor asked if I ever checked how wet the soil was down low. I bought an $8 moisture meter, stuck it in 6 inches, and the reading was soaked while the top inch looked dry. Turns out I was drowning the roots the whole time. How does everyone here check moisture under the surface?
