Unpopular opinion: My aunt's slapdash butter softening trick works every time
She used to just leave butter on the counter for an hour, no microwave or fancy tricks. I thought it was too simple until I kept ruining cookies with melted butter. Now I just plan ahead and let it sit out, and my doughs come together way better. It saves me from a lot of greasy failures.
Totally agree about planning ahead. I used to nuke butter for cookies and ended up with weird flat puddles instead. Just leaving it out is the only method that never messes up the texture for me.
You know what works better than nuking? Grate your butter straight from the fridge. It softens fast without melting. I do this for pie crusts too. Gets that perfect crumbly texture every time.
