Showerthought: A woman at the King Soopers bakery in Denver said box mixes are cheating, and my 7 year old nephew's cupcakes beat her display case
I stood in line at the King Soopers on Colorado Blvd last Saturday and listened to this baker tell a customer that anyone using a box mix should not call themselves a baker. Here is the thing, my nephew made cupcakes from a $2.50 Duncan Hines box for his school bake sale and they sold out in 15 minutes. I have done scratch bakes with cake flour and room temp butter that turned out dry as a cracker, so I am not sure the mix versus scratch line is as clean as she made it sound. Does anyone track their own win rate with box versus scratch, or is it just me who can't reliably taste the difference?
