Serious question, does anyone else think a lopsided cake tastes better than a perfect one?
I made my sister's birthday cake last Saturday and one whole side slid off when I tried to move it from the rack to the plate. My oven runs hot on the right, so the layers came out uneven, and by the time I stacked them with buttercream the whole thing leaned like a tower in a windstorm. Ngl I almost tossed it, but I patched the gap with extra frosting and stuck a candle in the high side to hide the slope. Everyone at the table said it was the best cake I have made, and honestly I think the crumb was better because the thin side got a little crisp. I know most folks chase that perfect flat top and level layers, but I am starting to think a cake with some lean to it just eats better. Has anyone else noticed their messy bakes beat their clean ones, or am I just making excuses for my oven?
