Vent: I picked a cheap stand mixer over a used Hobart and I still kick myself
So about a year ago I had to pick between a new 5 quart mixer on sale for $250 and a beat up used Hobart N50 a guy in Fresno was selling for $400. My wife said save the money, so I went with the cheap one, and honestly it has been fine for cookies and quick breads but it stalls out on stiff dough every single time. I make about four loaves a week and the motor gets hot and smells like hot plastic by the third one, which makes me nervous. The Hobart was ugly, scratched up, and the guy said it had been in a closed deli for 20 years, but those things run forever and I knew it. I keep telling myself the $150 I saved went into flour and it did, but here I am 14 months later eyeing the same listing style on marketplace again. Your mileage may vary depending on how much dough you actually push through, but if you bake more than a couple loaves a week, the used workhorse wins. Has anyone else made the cheap call and lived with the regret, or is it just me?
