A $30 digital scale changed how I bake bread

I used to guess my flour amounts with cups and had a lot of bad loaves. I bought a simple digital scale for about thirty bucks and started weighing everything in grams. My sourdough stopped being a rock and got a real open crumb. Does anyone have a good weight for whole wheat flour in a basic sandwich loaf recipe?

My buddy Mark in Toledo swore his rye bread was cursed. He'd get these dense, sad bricks every weekend. I finally asked him last month if he used a scale. He laughed and said he used the same coffee mug to scoop flour for years. I told him to grab a cheap one and try 500 grams of flour as a start for his usual recipe. He texted me a picture of his first decent loaf three days later. He said the scale felt like cheating because it was so easy.

Scales are a total game changer for baking (especially with flour, since how you scoop makes a huge difference). That "cheating" feeling just means you finally removed the guesswork.
