Saw a coop setup at the county fair in Kalispell that made me rethink my whole run
Went to the Flathead County Fair in Kalispell last weekend with my kids and of course I had to stop by the poultry barn. Most of the coops there were pretty standard, but one lady had built her run with a double layer of hardware cloth buried 12 inches down and out, and she told me she has not lost a single bird to digging in 9 years living right next to a creek full of raccoons. I have been losing about 2 hens a year to something digging under my fence and I always blamed coyotes, but now I am pretty sure it was raccoons the whole time. She also had these little PVC feeders capped at both ends so the feed does not get wet or kicked out, which cost her maybe $15 total at the hardware store. I stood there for like 20 minutes just asking her questions while my kids pet the rabbits, lol. I went home and started pricing out hardware cloth the same night. Anyone else here dealt with persistent diggers, and did burying the wire actually solve it for you?
