Pro tip: swapping my feeder for a 3 foot long PVC pipe cut my feed waste from a scoop a day to almost nothing
I was losing about a quart of feed a day with those round plastic feeders because my 6 hens would scratch half of it onto the ground. Six weeks ago I built a PVC tube feeder for under $15 and the difference showed up fast. By week 2 the feed bill dropped by a third, and by week 5 the scratch area under the old spot was bare dirt instead of a carpet of wasted pellets. Turns out they were billing out every kernel just to get to the bits they liked. My egg count never dipped, still 5 or 6 a day from 7 hens, so they are eating what they need and not just making a mess. Anyone else switched feeders and seen a number like that, or am I just lucky with this batch?
