Met a guy on the Colorado Trail who carried a full cast iron skillet

Ran into this older hiker near the Hope Pass section, dude had a 10 inch Lodge pan strapped to his pack. He said he cooks fresh trout every night and it's worth the 6 extra pounds. You think that's insane or is there some charm to packing heavy for real meals?

Wait, is that a 10 inch or a 12 inch pan? I thought the standard Lodge pans were 12 inches for that weight. Either way, that's still a LOT of weight for a trout dinner, but hey, if it makes him happy, more power to him.

10 inches is honestly better for getting a good sear without overcrowding. Plus if you're already packing a 10 pound iron pan on a hike, the extra 2 inches really isn't gonna make or break your pack weight.
