Did the Colorado Trail in 24 days with maps only, then tried a phone app in Montana and hated it
Two summers back I hiked the Colorado Trail with paper maps and a compass, 24 days total, and never got lost once. This July I tried a phone app on a 5 day loop in the Beartooths and the battery died on day 2, leaving me guessing at a junction. Is it just me, or does staring at a screen make you notice way less of the actual trail?
That junction guessing part is the worst, I did the same thing on the CDT in Wyoming when my cache ran out and spent an hour second guessing a cairn. Without a screen in my face I actually notice side trails, water sources, and weird rock shapes I'd totally walk past otherwise.
