Burned $70 on a fleece that wasn't packable enough for my Sierra trips last summer, now I just layer a cheap wool midlayer under a wind shell and it weighs half as much.
Has anyone else tried ditching the puffy for a simpler layering system on longer routes?

Fleece and a wind shell is such a solid combo, sorry you had to learn that the hard way with an expensive puffy. I started doing the same thing in the Sierras after my down jacket got soaked one trip and I was miserable. A thin wool baselayer under a sun hoody with a wind breaker on top keeps me warm enough for most miles, and it packs down to nothing. Does the wind shell ever feel too crinkly or sweaty for you, or is it breathable enough?

Agree with @lilyfisher, my wind shell breathes fine but I only wear it while moving not sitting around.
