Shoutout to the Rochester shop that let me reflow a 20 year old comm board by hand, but is hand reflow still smart?
Last month I was at a small field shop outside Rochester and the lead there, Dana, showed me how they still fix old comm boards with a hot air station and a steady hand instead of sending them out. She swears it saves the customer $900 a unit and keeps planes flying, but my current lead says one cold joint at altitude is not worth any savings. I get both sides, speed and money versus knowing the solder is right. Where do you all draw the line on hand reflow for flight critical gear?
