I finally read the FAA's own numbers on wire chafing and the 737 stat got me
I was digging through an FAA aging aircraft report from 2019 and the stat that stuck with me was that wire chafing shows up in something like 30 percent of reported electrical faults on older airframes. So here's the debate: some guys at my shop in Wichita swear by scheduled loom inspections every 500 hours, while others say you're just burning labor and you should inspect on condition only. I get both sides, but 30 percent feels too high to leave to chance, and the report said most of it was hidden where you can't see without pulling clamps. What's your shop's rule, timed inspection or condition based, and has chafing ever snuck up on you?
