Watched a dispatcher in Dallas scroll right past a carrier with active complaints, and it changed how I book every move
I was sitting in a small broker's office in Dallas two months ago, waiting to hand off paperwork for my brother's car, and the dispatcher had two screens open side by side. I watched him pull up a carrier's DOT record, see three unresolved damage claims from the past 8 months, and still put them on the load because their rate was $150 lower than everyone else. He said the claims were just people being picky and that the carrier promised to run open and careful. The car got picked up on time and showed up with a cracked rear bumper, and of course the broker stopped answering calls once the claim went in. That day is why I now write down the carrier's legal name, DOT number, and MC number BEFORE I pay any deposit, and I check those complaint records on my own instead of trusting a quote page. I also started asking for the certificate of insurance directly, not a summary the broker typed up. It costs me an extra 20 minutes every booking but it is the only reason I caught a bad carrier last month and cancelled in time. Has anyone else seen a broker care more about the margin than the record, and how do you screen for that upfront?
