I finally got a 2001 Civic with a mystery misfire to run smooth after three days
The car came in with a P0302 code and rough idle, but new plugs and coils didn't fix it. I spent hours checking everything until I found a tiny crack in the intake manifold gasket near cylinder 2 with a smoke machine. Replaced that $35 gasket and it purred like new. Has anyone else had a simple gasket cause such a headache on those D-series engines?

Sounds like you just got lucky with that one.

My old mechanic always said to start with the expensive stuff first, which meant I used to swap coils and injectors for every misfire. Finding that tiny intake leak on my friend's 1999 Civic last year totally changed my approach. Now the smoke machine comes out before I even open my toolbox for parts. It's crazy how a cheap, soft gasket can mimic every symptom of a failed ignition part. I wasted so much money before I learned to look for air leaks first on those older Hondas.
