That old timer's tip about hammering from the center saved my quarter panel work
Back in 2013 I was in a shop near Nashville and this retired guy, Pete, kept telling me to stop starting my hammer work from the edge of the damage. I thought he was just being picky, so I ignored it for like a week. Finally I had a 2010 Civic quarter panel that was folded in weird and I was chasing the same low spot over and over. I tried his way, starting at the center of the impact point and working outward in circles, and the metal actually started relaxing instead of pushing out. Took me about 40 minutes less on that panel and the filler coat was way thinner. I still think about that when I see guys fresh out of school beating from the outside in. Has anyone else had a habit like that, where some old school method just clicks after you've been fighting it for a while?
