Spent $180 on a spot weld bit set when my $40 drill bits kept snapping, and I am still mad about the whole thing
Last Tuesday I was pulling door skins off a 2016 Silverado and went through four cheap spot weld cutters in about an hour. Each one just walked off center and snapped the pilot, which meant more time with a punch and a grinder fixing my own mess. I stood there in the bay and made the call: keep fighting the cheap bits or drop real money on a proper set. I ordered the $180 kit that night and finished the job in 40 minutes the next morning, clean holes and no rework. Here is my problem though, I should not have needed to lose half a day to figure out something a 20 year guy would have told me in 30 seconds. So what are you all running for spot weld cutters, and does anyone actually get decent life out of the cheap ones or is that just a story we tell ourselves?
I watched a guy on YouTube test like six different brands on the same panel and the cheap ones actually did fine for the first 10 or so holes before they went dull. His point was that a lot of the snapping comes from people running too fast and not letting the cutter do the work. I still don't buy it completely because a $15 bit that only lasts 10 holes is not saving me money when I'm on the clock. A buddy of mine swears by the Blair rotabroach cutters and says he gets 50 plus holes out of each one if he keeps the speed down. For the price of your kit you probably won't be buying cutters again for a long time.
