Question about what a painter at the shop down the street said about sanding grit
Was grabbing lunch at the taqueria on 4th last Tuesday and ran into a painter from the shop down the street. He said he does his last pass by hand with 400 wet on every blend job, no matter how small, and I kind of brushed it off at first. Tried it on a silver bumper repair I was fighting all week and the blend edge just disappeared under the light. Took me one extra hour but the customer picked it up without a single comment, which honestly never happens with silver. Curious what grit you guys finish with on metallic blends, does it change by color or do you keep one grit for everything?
Man, I gotta disagree with you on the 400 on everything. The edge probably looked great because silver hides stuff anyway, so that one hour might not have been the sandpaper doing the work. I've seen 400 wet load up and skate across the panel if you're not careful, and on a dark color it can leave tracers that show up worse under the sun than the blend edge ever did. One grit for every color just doesn't add up to me when a black blend and a white blend act nothing alike. Not saying your painter buddy is wrong for his shop, but I'd test that 400 trick on a dark metallic before I made it my go-to.
