I thought a $300 paint thickness gauge was a waste of money. A job this morning proved me wrong.

My old boss at the body shop in Dayton always said you could feel a respray with your hand. We missed a ton of filler on a trade-in because of that advice. Honestly, a decent gauge is the only real way to know what you're working with before you start sanding. It saves way more than three hundred bucks by avoiding one bad repair.

Wait, they were trying to feel for filler with their hands? That's wild. I've seen guys try the magnet trick on quarter panels, but that only tells you so much. You can't feel a thin layer of glaze or spot putty, and you'd totally miss a plastic bumper cover. That's how you sand right into fresh primer and ruin your whole day.
