Stacked 200 photos of the moon, got a weird purple edge I didn't expect
Last Tuesday I tried my first lucky imaging run with a cheap planetary cam and the color fringing was so bad I spent an hour on calibration frames before realizing my barlow lens had fingerprints on it, anyone else ever tracked down a problem that simple after blaming the software first?

The fingerprints thing got me because it's the same story with my truck's backup camera last spring. I drove around for two weeks blaming the wiring harness and the cheap aftermarket screen, ordered a whole new unit, then my kid wiped the lens with his greasy fingers and the picture was crystal clear. It's like the universe punishes you for overthinking by hiding the answer in the dumbest spot possible. I've got a buddy who cleans his telescope mirrors with dish soap and distilled water, swears by it, but the real lesson is always check the cheap, dirty, stupid stuff first. My rule now is if something's acting up, I touch every lens and glass surface before I even open the software. Makes me wonder how many hours of my life I've burned on calibration frames when the fix was just a microfiber cloth and thirty seconds.
