A guy at the Grand Canyon star party let me look through his 16 inch dob and I have not stopped thinking about Saturn since
Last month I drove out to the Grand Canyon for the star party and spent the first hour fumbling with my little 6 inch scope while a guy named Rick from Flagstaff set up a massive homemade dob next to me. Around 10pm he waved me over and said "forget the photos for a minute, just put your eye here" and pointed me at Saturn. The rings were so sharp I could see the gap in them and the shadow of the planet on the rings, and my phone shot of the same planet looked like a fuzzy blob on a stick. He told me he has been bringing that scope out there every June for 11 years and has never once tried to shoot it, just looks. I sat there for maybe 5 minutes while other people waited and honestly it kind of reset why I drag a camera out at all. Now I am wondering if I should stop chasing stacked images for a while and just enjoy the eyepiece more. Has anyone else had a visual-only session like that completely change how they feel about shooting the sky?
