Vent: My whole backup plan fell apart when the cloud service went down

Last Tuesday, the online storage I use for all my client files just stopped working for almost six hours. I had a big project due and couldn't get to any of my work. Everyone says you should trust the cloud completely, but what happens when it just vanishes? Has anyone else had to scramble because their main backup source failed?

Look, relying on one cloud service was your first mistake. You should have had a local backup on an external drive too. The cloud is just someone else's computer, and computers fail. This outage proves you can't put all your trust in any single system, even a popular one. The real lesson is to always have your own physical copy of critical files.

Betty's totally right about the local backup. I'd even take it a step further and have two physical copies, like an external hard drive you keep at home and a second one you leave at a friend's place or a safe deposit box. That way if there's a fire or theft, you're still covered. It's a bit of extra work to update both, but it beats losing everything.

Oh brilliant, so the cloud is just vapor now. Guess we're all back to keeping important stuff under the mattress.
