Just realized my $0 fix for a squeaky oven door beat the $45 kit I almost bought
My oven door started squealing every time I opened it, loud enough that my wife heard it from the living room, and I had a replacement hinge kit sitting in my cart for $45. Before ordering I looked at the hinge and saw it was just dry metal rubbing on metal, so I wiped it down and put a thin layer of plain vegetable shortening on the pivot point with a Q-tip. That was 5 weeks ago and the noise is completely gone. Now I'm wondering if I got lucky and it will gum up later, or if the $45 kit is just a solution in search of a problem. Has anyone had a dry lube like graphite work better for something like this, or does grease always win in the end?
