I picked the $28 brake pads over the $60 ones and I'm starting to think I got it backwards

My mechanic told me at 140k miles that the cheap pads would stop fine and last just as long, but 8 months later they're squealing on every stop and I'm wondering if anyone else has regretted going budget on a part that matters this much.
