Appreciation post: my mechanic in Reno asked me one question about my oil changes and I realized I'd been doing it wrong for 6 years
I used to drain the oil while the engine was cold every time because that's how my dad showed me in his garage back in 2018. The guy at the shop on Wells Ave asked if I let it run for a few minutes first, and when I said no he just pointed at the sludge sitting in the bottom of my drain pan. How long do you all warm up the engine before draining, or does it really matter that much?
Man the sludge at the bottom of the pan is the grossest thing to see, feels like a crime scene down there. Running it for like 5 minutes just until the gauge moves a little makes a huge difference, the oil flows out way faster and actually takes the junk with it. Doing it cold for 6 years though, your engine was basically marinating in its own regrets. At least the guy on Wells Ave caught it before something real bad happened, sounds like he saved you a rebuild.
