Spent $45 on a premium research database for a one page paper and my library card did it for free
Last month I paid $45 out of my own pocket for a one month subscription to a history database because I needed three old newspaper articles for a short paper on the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. The site looked official and the sign up page promised sources I could not find anywhere else, so I typed in my card number without thinking twice. Two days later I walked into my local branch in Dayton and the librarian pulled up the exact same database on their public computers, free with my card, no limit on how many articles I could print. I felt like a fool standing at the reference desk while she showed me the login screen. Before you pay for any research site, have you checked whether your library already has it?
Did you even ask the librarian before you signed up though? Most people walk right past that desk and never think to check. My branch in Columbus has like forty databases on their site, you just log in with your card number and the PIN they gave you at sign up. It takes two minutes to look and saves you real money.
