Update: My team found a Roman coin hoard in York and everyone wanted to dig it up right away.
I was the one who said we should map the whole site first, not just grab the shiny stuff. We spent three days with ground-penetrating radar and found the foundation of a villa under the field. Anyone else had to push back against a fast dig?

Mapping first is how you find the real story, not just the treasure. It's tough when the group gets gold fever and you're the one saying slow down. You probably saved a whole chapter of history from being lost just for a few coins. The villa foundation changes everything about that site's story.

Honestly that's just good sense in any field. I see it all the time with people wanting to fix the obvious problem without checking the whole system first. Slowing down to get the full picture almost always saves more work later.
