Tried photographing 300 pottery sherds on a black cloth, and it backfired in a weird way

I was cataloging a box of Roman Terra Sigillata from a site near Bath and used black cloth for contrast, but the gloss on 40 of them just vanished into the background. Has anyone found a backdrop color that works for both glossy and matte sherds, or do you just shoot them twice?
